Another autumn day on the Palouse, and just the regular flow of life here on the homestead. The garden is nearly done, with the corn almost gone and the squashes maturing on the vines. There are some potatoes to dig and the kohlrabi to harvest. I leave the kale in until it gets beaten down by the freeze so I can use it and give some to the chickens.
Speaking of chickens, they all are happy it's autumn as now they can be "free range" for a while. I only let them out when I am home as one never knows when marauding dogs will come through and desire a chicken dinner or a good chase. The young girls are getting used to being bossed by the old ladies and I'm hoping when they are once again penned up, but all together there will be only a small adjustment to the pecking order.
All the early pears were harvested and I was able to give most away. I am, however, going to have to treat for codling moth next year as most of them had worm damage. My little apple trees are suffering too, on their small harvest this year. I will use all the fruit anyway or as much as I am able. I made pear/pineapple jam and dried pears with the early ones that I had remaining.
OK, off to see if I can get some quilting done. I have already entered some knitting, spinning & natural dyeing into the Palouse Empire Fair for this weekend and will enter again in the Latah County Fair next week.
