this is the story of our life at "Rosevale on the Palouse Prairie" in eastern Washington State, and my love affair with all things fiber/fabric. 'BeanQueen' you might ask, well in my previous life I was the curator of the Phaseolus Germplasm Collection (beans native to the western hemisphere) in the United States. My lovely #2 sister gifted me with my 'autre nom'.

I bring Johann Edvard home from the hospital
Today I went to Spokane to pick up my antique doll from the Doll Clinic. I have decided to name him Johann Edvard Mum, the Johann Edvard to honor his first mom's Danish German ancestry & the Mum for her last name. Johann belonged to my paternal grandmother Bertha Magdeline Mum-Welsh. She was born in 1900 & recieved her doll sometime between 1905 & 1910. So Johann is about 100 years old. He actually was not in really bad condition, but did have many repairs made. Beth said that the clothes that someone had put on him actually protected him somewhat in his long journey to me. Last year my parents gave him to me, telling me that they thought I would appreciate him the most. I was so touched by their love & their thoughts. Little did I know that Johann was so valuable. He originally came with a sister - my grandma's next older sister got the girl - and is actually quite rare. Beth had only ever seen him in a catalogue, but immeadiately recognized him when I opened the box. When we found what his value was to collectors, we were flabbergasted. Although I would have loved him just as much if he was only valued at $1 - he is a piece of my ancestry & a real family heirloom. I plan to make him clothes that will reflect the "Little Lord Fauntleroy" theme & put some hand-made bobbin lace from my mother's great-grandmother on the collar of his coat - a family heirloom from both sides of my family :~). As soon as I get some of the "after" pictures I will post them, although it may be a while as I really don't want to post him in "nakey" pics - I could be accused of posting objectionable material, LOL.
